Hi Heidi! So good to hear from you again - I remember my interview with you a few years back and really enjoy the focus of WE Magazine for Women. Super glad to know you're a member of Boomer Diva Nation. I'm new but loving it there!

This is so true! I never noticed before that "networking" has negative connotations whereas "social networking" doesn't. Networking is kinder now that it is social. I don't like it when I feel someone is "networking" with me just so I can help their business. You make a good point about social networking being about “quality” sharing.

I enjoy online networking for the same reasons you've expressed. But I also love the fact that we, at Boomer Diva Nation, take our networking to another level when we connect every year for a Diva Weekend. Meeting a sister you've been networking with online is the ultimate and makes our bond that much tighter.

Speak to my heart, Sharon! I'm from the 'old school', which means, I'm very careful about who I allow in my spirit. But, that didn't happen over night. I remember a time when all I wanted to do was have lots of girlfriends to laugh with, have slumber parties with, and to be that listening ear for. However, I quickly learned not everyone of them wanted the same, some were catty, gossipy and envious.

Mom use to tell me that not everyone you choose as a friend is really your friend -- well needless to say, it took a minute for me to get that but, when I did, I began removing them one by one. I don't say this to make it sound as though, "I'm all that and a bag of chips", I have my quirks just like everyone else however, friendship is earned, it's precious and in my opinion, a gift.

There are just some things about us as Women, when we hurt, we vent -- it's cleansing and although we may not always say the right things at that moment, we want someone to care enough to 'listen,' right? ;-) I can honestly say I have 3 friends who really listen and tell me what time it is, whether I wanted to hear it or not ~ and vice versa (not to mention my siblings who do it REALLY well, LOL!)

Those are unconditional friendships ~ our gifts per se.

Bev - I hear you! There are few friends that I have that can pull me out of a "woe is me" situation. When they say those three words "get over it" I know they're seeing something I'm not because I trust them to be looking out for my best interest. Thanks for the compliment! Coming from you it means an awful lot.

I think the older we get it's always to good to stay in touch with a couple of your "best friends." Like you said, they can help you through the tough times--they know your history and have been there and done that with you. I recall when I was going through my divorce I called my girlfriend during one of my pity parties and she flat out told me to get over it because he wasn't worth no tears. She hurt my feelings because I wanted her sympathy. But I later realized she gave me just what I needed it when I needed it. That's what TRUE friends are for. By the way, I absolutely love your writing!

This is a good post. You clarify how your thinking about retirement has changed over time. Your example is a good one for those of us who have not considered what retirement means in modern times. For so many of us baby boomers this is becoming a great awakening. Becoming a baby boomer entrepreneur is something that must be planned in order to be successful.
