How Often Should You Call Kids at College
By Momsprim • Sep 8th, 2008 • Category: Finance, Mothering to Mentoring
We are like new parents all over again. I remember wanting to pick my daughter up, even when all she was doing was yawning. I’d stare at her sleeping just to make sure she was breathing. She was so precious to us then.
Well she’s every bit as precious now even though she’s almost 6 ft tall and 6 hours away at college. I just have to adjust the relationship so that she continues to grow, with our support as needed, just as we hoped she would.
I’m learning as I go, much like I did when she was a newborn. She’s fitting in fine at college but we seem to call her about twice a day, adding to the other two calls she gets from her grandparents!
I’m feeling like a very bad helicopter parent (that’s the new nick name for certain types of parents of young people today - we hover around our kids like helicopters trying to intercept every potential risk or bump that might come their way).
Of course this is not good but I do want to be there for her during this transition. What’s the happy median?
If you have a child at college or had a child at college, how often a day do/did you call them at school?
Momsprim is just entering her prime years and looking forward to the adventures ahead!

I dont think that there is a set amout of times you should call but I do think that college is a time for the young adults to spread their wings.
I know when my daughter left for college (3yrs ago) we started off talking almost daily but it soon faded as her work load picked up and as she got more used to the “college life”. We’ve sence then grown to chat in IM, email and use the phone less and less. I then encouraged her to meet her challenges and use me as a “sounding board” rather than a decision maker. This workd out wonderful.
Now, My daughter is 20years old and we are closer now than ever. Between IM, email and the phone I have some sort of contact with her at least 3-4 times a week.
Great post
